Detailed Info Below

Glaze Expert Alex Butt from Coyote Clay and Color (based in New Mexico) will be sharing his insights during this 2-day glazing seminar. As he imparts his knowledge about some of their most beautiful and successful glaze combinations, Alex will be demonstrating brush-on glaze techniques using Coyote's various glaze lines.
The workshop will provide an in-depth knowledge of working with Coyote's various glaze lines including; Texas Two-Step, Shinos, Archie Series, Crystalline (slow cool Constellation Glazes), Fantasy Glazes, Enduro-Color & Vibro-Color Glazes, Satin Glazes and Coyote Underglazes
Participants will be glazing their pots using these glazes, then SWFLPG will have them fired. On Sunday, we unload the kiln to see everyone’s results. Alex will then provide insight into the results that are revealed.
Participants should come prepared with 5 to 6 small bisque pieces (mug size or smaller) in a cone 5/6 clay body and some glaze brushes.
Some glazes will look better over texture and others are more successful on smooth surfaces. You can bring a mix or bring whatever you prefer and Alex will guide you to the best glazes to work with.
If you are interested in the Archie Series, some clay bodies do not work well with this series. You can find a list of those clay bodies here:

Alex will be providing all of the Coyote Glazes that participants will be using during the workshop.

Rocket Kiln Firing - Saturday December 6, 2025
While the Coyote Glaze sample pieces made on Friday are being fired in the electric kiln in preparation for Sunday’s reveal, workshop participants are invited to take part in a Rocket Kiln Firing on Saturday, December 6th.
The Rocket Pottery Kiln is a type of wood-fired kiln that uses "rocket stove" principles to achieve both low and high firing temperatures with minimal fuel and smoke. It often repurposes an old electric kiln shell or other materials to create a compact and efficient firing chamber. Its design focuses on maximizing heat and minimizing emissions by burning wood in a highly insulated, controlled environment.
Wood firing can result in unique and unpredictable glaze effects due to it being in a combustible atmosphere. The possibility of natural ash landing on the shoulders of the pots and the variable temperatures within the kiln, can result in interesting outcomes.
This traditional method is valued for its historical roots and the immersive, hands-on experience it provides. It often involves a collaborative effort, encouraging a strong sense of community among potters.
Participants may bring one to two small cup-sized bisqued vessels to glaze and fire on Saturday in the Rocket Kiln.
Arrive 9:30 am
Firing expected to take 4-6 hours
Cookout at Noon
