Graham Hay

“A Masterclass in Paper Clay”

Mid-Week Session – Tuesday & Wednesday November 12-13, 2024

Meet & Greet with Graham Hay, Friday evening November 8th

(Weekend Session also available – Saturday & Sunday November 9-10, 2024)

Punta Gorda, Florida

Join the Southwest Florida Potters Guild for a Hands-On Workshop with internationally-renowned paper clay artist Graham Hay.

A fun, information packed, hands-on paper clay workshop suitable for beginner through to the most experienced clay worker.  Graham will cover topics and techniques that include both radical variations of traditional ceramic practices as well as new techniques adapted from other crafts and arts.

Learn how to use paper clay in small and large volumes; how to modify existing paper clay; quick ways of drying paper clay and how to repair breaks. Graham will also review speed and turbo casting as well as the addition of other organics and metals.

·       Joining wet-to-dry and dry-to-dry (dipstick), "pour-joins", combinations ("dip-joins"), unfired to fired, lattice vertical and upside-down building.

·       Casting: Wet, dry and combination casting, overcasting and speed casting.

·       Radical techniques that include paper clay combined with wool, foam, food, and metal; enabling new shortcuts, textures, clay bodies, and greater creative expression.

·       Speed drying and firing with paper clay.

·       Sculpturing and texture shortcuts, such as dry-balls, tethering and armature-less.

·       Discuss implications for studio production, classroom organization, working methods, common fallacies about paper clay and the emerging paper clay aesthetics.

·       “Short and sharp" slideshow of images selected from over 150 paper clay artists from around the world to help clearly answer attendee questions, stimulate discussion, and illustrate techniques not covered.

Along the way Graham will talk a little about himself as well as the international paper clay movement.

At the end of this workshop, you will have enough information to begin experimenting with paper clay. You will know what to do to avoid some of the pitfalls along the way, as well as be aware of some of the new ways of building with paper clay compared to traditional clay.
